Music isn't just about notes and rhythms; it's about the spark that ignites creativity, the feeling that drives us to create something beautiful. In this blog I delve into the power of inspiration, drawing from timeless wisdom and some real-life stories.
The Universal Language: Longfellow's Echo
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously said, "Music is the universal language of mankind." I know this to be true from my own journey around the world playing for international audiences! Think about the times a melody has moved you, even when you didn't understand the lyrics. A soaring guitar solo, a haunting cello passage, the driving beat of a drum—these transcend cultural barriers, speaking directly to the soul.
I remember a time playing a gig in a small, bustling market in a Brunei. Though we didn't share a common spoken language with the audience, the moment we started playing a familiar tune, smiles spread across faces, feet began tapping, and a connection was forged. Music became the bridge, a shared experience that needed no translation.
Aristotle's Wings and Plato's Soul: A Symphony of Inspiration
Aristotle and Plato, in their combined wisdom, described music as something that "gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything." This perfectly encapsulates the transformative power of music. Imagine the composer, alone in their studio, channelling emotions into a symphony, or the songwriter, penning lyrics that capture the essence of a fleeting moment. Music allows us to soar beyond the mundane, to explore uncharted territories of emotion and thought. It's the soundtrack to our dreams and fuel for our imagination.
This reminds me of a time I was struggling with a particular composition that I was working on. It was only when I stepped away from the manuscript, put on a favourite classical piece, and allowed the music to wash over me that the solution became clear. The music didn't just entertain; it unlocked a new perspective for me.
Confucius and the Inevitable Pleasure of Music
Confucius wisely noted that "music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without." This resonates deeply with anyone who has ever felt the joy of playing a musical instrument, singing along to a favourite song, or simply immersing themselves in a beautiful piece of music.
It's a fundamental human need, a way to connect with our emotions and find solace in the beauty of sound. Even in the most challenging times, music can provide a sense of comfort and hope.
Inspiration Beyond the Notes: Women Who Inspire
Speaking of inspiration, I have three amazing daughters and an equally amazing friend who publishes the Australian Boating Manual who are carving out their own path in life and are inspirational. This year, for International Women’s Day 2025, they reminded me of the incredible strength and resilience that women display daily. They are amazing talented women, and I am very proud of each of them.
This leads me to the upcoming Women Who Sail Gathering on the Bay 2025 in Nelson Bay, Port Stephens. One of the featured presenters is Linda Frylink Anderson, a circumnavigator, author, and artist. Linda will be leading a session on overnight sailing, focusing on emotional preparedness. Her journey is a testament to the power of courage, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams. Linda's story, like the best musical compositions, is a symphony of determination and spirit. Her ability to navigate the vast oceans, both physically and emotionally, is a powerful source of inspiration for all of us. Her session will undoubtedly provide invaluable insights into facing challenges with grace and strength, much like a musician facing a daunting performance.
