In Calm and Storm
This incredibly dramatic and programmatic work by Francis McBeth was commissioned by the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Composed in two connected movements, it first portrays the calm sea, followed by a tumultuous storm. An exciting, vibrant work with an incredible ending!
The music comes alive through a combination of the exceptional individual talent of the players and the superb ensemble technique shown by the band. The clarity of the unison playing skill of each section of the band together with the pyramidal concept of balance displayed by the ensemble band, showcases the full range of colours and emotion that can be achieved by the wind orchestra.
This recording was taken on 2 March 2011 from the direct-to-air broadcast on ABC Classic FM by the Royal Australian Navy and under the direction of Commander Phillip Anderson OAM RAN.
